My 5 Blog Writing for Money Tips

My 5 Blog Writing For Money Tips

Here are my 5 Blog Writing for Money Tips.

You can definitely make a good living writing blogs and other types of content.

These tips are rooted in a lesson I learned a long time ago when a very wise mentor schooled me. To this day, I still can hear my mentor’s words every time I sit down to write, every time I walk into a seminar room to give a speech, or every time I take the stage.

I will never forget those words he once told me,

"No matter what you ever write or what you ever say, remember: Someone out there needs to hear what you have to say. Your content always matters."

He said don't worry, just keep writing. Keep expressing myself.

Ever since that day, I learned a very valuable lesson.

That’s when I discovered how much money there was to be made when you learn how to effectively leverage your writing online.

There are affiliate links within this post. What this  means is that if you decide to purchase anything through one of my links, I'll be rewarded with a small commission at absolutely no extra cost to you. This small commission helps me run and maintain my website.

5 Blog Writing Tips for Money 101: The Steep Learning Curve

Make no mistake. It won’t happen overnight. For most writers (and there are exceptions), it will take at least 3-6 months to see ANY money, 6-12 months to see a part-time income, and at least 1-2 years to begin making a full-time income from your blog.

That’s because there is a lot of content building and a steep learning curve in the beginning.

First you need to build a solid content library. It takes time to build your content library (your website, your content blog of at least 30-40 blog posts, your social media presence, trustworthiness with your readers, relationships, etc.). This building process alone could take 3-6 months.

Even if you are a naturally gifted good writer who can create boatloads of original content with ease, you will still need to effectively monetize your blogging by learning how to create various income streams.

As you can see, the initial learning curve can be steep. It certainly takes a good chunk of time to start a money-making blog, realistically at least 3-6 months of consistent content creation (at least 3-4 articles per week)

However there is an easier way to acquire all the tools you will need more quickly.(Read on).

If you are serious about blogging as a full-time career, there is a tremendous upside once you clear these formidable hurdles.

You will be able to be your own boss, and make your own hours. You will be able to create a laptop digital lifestyle, and work from your laptop while you travel, anywhere in the world! .

So don’t think about it too much. Make a strong commitment, and just do it!

blog writing for money

As my mentor once told me, keep writing.

So here are My 5 Blog Writing for Money Tips.

My 5 Blog Writing for Money Tips

Here are my 5 Blog Writing for Money Tips for bloggers to make money (income streams).

1. Affiliate Marketing:  This is my #1 tip and my favorite way to generate income through blogging. If you can write and create valuable content on your blog that is helpful to your readers, you will slowly begin to build up a fan base (traffic).

52 Essential Tools for Affiliate marketing

FIRST getting traffic to come to your site is the most important component toward building an income from your blog.

Once you have a steady flow of traffic, you can leverage my #1 favorite way income stream to make money: affiliate marketing. As an affiliate marketer, you promote another company’s product or service to your site visitors (traffic) by placing an outbound link (called your unique affiliate link) often displayed on the right side (widget area) of your article that will redirect your visitor to a place where they can make a purchase.

Should your visitor click the link and make a purchase from the seller (your affiliate program), you will receive a commission from the seller. What is wonderful about affiliate marketing is that YOU do not need to directly sell anything; by simply referring your reader to a link, any purchase they make there you are GUARANTEED to make a commission.

affiliate marketing diagram

All you need to do is write, engaging and relevant content. I stress relevant since the affiliate products that you display in the body of your articles should always be related to what you are writing in your blog post, e.g. if you are writing a blog about the Best Scuba Gear then you should have affiliate links connected to programs that sell the latest scuba gear and equipment.

The seller (your affiliate program) will pay you a commission for referring that purchaser from anywhere from 3% - 50% of the retail value of the product. As you can see, when there are high-ticket items purchased (such as scuba gear), you can make a very healthy commission from one single purchase.

Now imagine if you had hundreds (or even a few thousand) of visitors reading your article every month. Think of the potential for affiliate commissions from sales you can generate!

2. Digital Products:

blog writing for money through referring products

Bloggers create and sell their own digital products. Digital products are awesome because there is no overhead and low risk.  These digital products can be distributed quickly and easily and don’t require inventory.

Here are some examples of some digital products bloggers can create:

  • Online Courses and Workshops: LIVE teaching courses
  • E-Courses: Recorded pre-packaged courses to resell over and over again
  • Ebooks – Self-published e-books which can be given away as an incentive or sold for profit
  • Premium Content – Pay-to-access content
  • Membership sites – Teaching and community mix.
  • Music and Photos – Musicians, writers, and photographers sell their content online.
  • Audio or video – Create music files, voice overs, or video clips.
  • Apps, plugins or themes – For coders who love tech, e.g. WordPress

3. Physical Products

physical products like DSLR cameras

There are many bloggers who sell physical products.

Here are some examples:

  • Conferences, Classes or Special Events – Selling tickets to LIVE in-person experiences such as related conferences, classes or special events to their blogs through agents like Eventbrite
  • Handmade Products – If you were once in the cottage industry and are skilled at making art & crafts hand-made products (think “wooden dolls”), you can sell them for a profit
  • Books and Publications – Bloggers have become published authors in the traditional sense as a result of their blogs.
  • Manufactured Products – Make your idea a reality by finding a manufacturer to produce your product
  • E-Commerce Retail – Selling their products such as DSLR cameras, watches, jewelry, etc. through their own e-commerce store such as Shopify, or through Amazon.

An increasing number of bloggers have started selling physical products in recent years. It can be profitable, but not my favorite method due to high maintenance; as tracking manufacturing, keeping inventory, shipping, returns, etc. can get complicated.

Drop shipping (a process where the seller does not have to bear the risk of holding any personal inventory) is an alternative that has become increasingly popular today.

4. Related Services

fashion freelancing

There are bloggers who leverage their expertise related to their blog topic and get paid when others hire them. Services can be offered in the virtual space as well as the physical space.

Here are some examples:

  • Public Speaking –Bloggers now are finding speaking gigs as a result of becoming influencers as a result of their blogs
  • Freelancing - Offering a service related to anything about their blog. For instance, personal 1-on-1 coaching, mentoring, writing classes, or a skill in any niche (e.g. musical instrument repair)
  • Interior Design, Fashion– Bloggers provide in-person services to their local readers in any area of personal expertise that they have written about in the blog

If you can leverage a skill you already have, this can be an excellent side hustle. However, the downside of this activity is that you are trading time for money. You can only earn as much as your time allows. In addition, this activity is not scalable;

The idea of creating a successful blog is to generate passive income streams, where you can ear income while you sleep.

5. Advertising & Sponsored Content

sponsored content

Companies may be interested in advertising on your blog posts if your readers fit their ideal customer demographic. If you have a high steady stream of traffic, they will pay you a handsome sum to get to those ideal customers.

Here are several ways to bring advertising into your blog:

  • Sponsored Posts – You write posts mentioning their product, and companies will pay you for it
  • Reviews & Giveaways – You highlight their product on your blog, and companies will pay you for it (or at least provide you with one of their free products)
  • Display Ads – Graphics displayed anywhere within your content, namely your widget area, header, or footer
  • Podcast, Newsletter, and Video Sponsorships – Companies will pay you to advertise in your emails, mini commercials in your videos, or podcast episodes

Advertising requires a lot of traffic to be truly profitable. Although it is easy to start, this barrier to entry no longer makes this popular income stream for bloggers as lucrative as it once was.

With everyone being bombarded these days with so much irrelevant sales content, there is also a high risk these days of alienating your readers (who wants to be assaulted by the ads?) Thus it will make your site look high pressure salesy and cheap.

Definitely this my least recommended way of generating an income stream.

  • Dawn says:

I’m looking into how to make money online. Some of this seems very complicated though….. Is there somewhere to go and get training for this stuff?

  • Jim says:

That’s amazing Kaju! I had no idea that there were so many ways to blog and make money online – affiliate marketing, promoting online courses, e-books, e-commerce, hand-made products. It is mind-boggling to know that there is an endless amount of stuff I can do.

I sure did learn a lot from you, Kaju!

Keep writing those great and informative posts!

    Jim

    • Kaju says:

Thank You Jim. Although there are a plethora of ways we can make money blogging online, all we really need to do is harness 1 or 2 of these ways by placing them consistently and effectively into action and we can make a decent passive income from it. If we blog consistently 3-4 x per week and write great helpful content, in one year we can be making a good living blogging.

The key i to build traffic, which takes time. Once we are able to build up high traffic to our blogs, and we can leverage 1 or 2 of the make money online ways I have mentioned in my article, your monthly income can build up quickly. I have done in, and I have seen it.

  • Fran Kelso says:

Kaju, you have me thinking. I really believe it important to have multiple streams of income if you can. I do have a couple. I have my affiliate marketing websites, the books I have written, and my jewelry business. All of these help. I’m hoping the last two fill in the gaps until my affiliate sites start bringing in some cash. Haven’t made much yet, but I have faith that they will produce if I just keep building.

I need to produce some digital products. Any suggestions for what I could create?

    • Kaju says:

You are spot on with your thinking Fran. It will serve us best if we are able to produce multiple streams of passive income. The more the better. As for digital product recommendations, let me look into that and get back to you.

I’m happy you are currently making income from your books and your jewelry business until you can gain traction with your affiliate sites, and your strong gratitude in life has helped you see this through with happiness and vigor. Kudos!

  • John says:

    Thanks for sharing Kaju,
There are a lot of profound truths here for sure. Most notably setting the right expectations, that blogging is not a job, it is a “vehicle” you can build, craft and master. So it is something that you own, so its really an asset. How much income you generate from your own asset depends on the value you provide to the market.

So that is a good guide you mention to expect at least 1-2 years to begin making a full-time income from your blog. But again it all depends on your outputs and the value you provide to the market place.

“You will get all you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want.” (Zig Ziglar)

Your 5 tips are really spot on and highlight the endless possibilities with blogging! Wishing you success online, John

    • Kaju says:

Absolutely John, Thanks for seeing this most important point of the article. Blogging is an asset that appreciates when we do it correctly and consistently. How much value and help you provide the reader/viewer will determine how much income you generate in the long run.

My estimate of 1-2 years was a very conservative estimate for the newbie; we know we can build a great money-making blog in a much shorter time span. It all depends on us, we will get back what we put in. Like right now, I’m working really hard, I am already up to blog #98 on this young site, focused on all helpful quality content. The possibilities of blogging are truly endless as you wisely state. The most exciting thing about blogging is that its evergreen, and by doing it well and consistently our own real estate (our websites) will grow in value without an expiration date.

I love your quote from Zig Ziglar. So true. Gold!
Thank You John so much for offering such an on-point and thoughtful comment here:)!
