In this review, I will providing the answers to that question.

You Tubers and social media influencers have become ubiquitous in the year 2019, and the most social media engagement is consistently being driven through video marketing.

Today, with the online tools and training available at such a cost effective price, even the casual video hobbyist, marketer, vlogger, has access to more sophisticated video recording and editing tools to include in their tool box than ever before.

Therefore, in-depth knowledge of video recording and editing from DSLR cameras, Go Pro devices, and smartphones have become vital in order to stay relevant.

This is ever more vital as more hobbyists, entrepreneurs, and ordinary users are creating successful online businesses than ever before through video marketing.

Camtasia 2018 is a very user-friendly video recording and editing software program by TechSmith.  In fact, it is one of the easiest to use such programs on the market today.

The user-friendliness of Camtasia 2018, its features and benefits is surely best suited to allow beginners and intermediate video creators, instructors, vloggers, and hobbyists to easily create and edit video content for You Tube, Vimeo, and social media.

However, it does come at a steep price, and I will discuss this “price” later in this review.

So without further ado, here is our own Personal Review of Camtasia 2018.

What is So Good About Camtasia 2018?

is Camtasia as good as Adobe premiere Pro?
Camtasia by TechSmith

According to their website, Camtasia 2018 makes editing your videos easier, and faster than ever. This is certainly true

Camtasia is one of the most user-friendly video editing and screen recording programs on the market.

But is it worth the price?

Well yes and no.  (More on this to follow)

The new video editor is certainly an improvement over previous versions of Camtasia (Camtasia 9, Camtasia 8/2) and is packed with the following:

1. Enhanced video processing

2. All-new production technology

3. An innovative library

4. Stock videos

5. Other creative assets to help you create more polished, professional videos.

Camtasia 2018 vs Camtasia 9, is it worth the price?

One thing I must say about Camtasia 2018 (and other previous Camtasia versions), is that Camtasia is one of the more user-friendly and intuitive video editing software and screen recording programs out there.

We have used Camtasia 2018, and compared to other comparable video editing and screen record programs it is definitely easier to use.

For this reason, if you are a complete beginner at video editing and screen recording, and are looking to make great looking and EASY tutorials that you can upload to You Tube or Vimeo, Camtasia might be a great program for you to use.

Camtasia 2018 allows you to easily create and edit excellent high-quality DSLR, Go Pro, and video tutorials using mixed media. There are some awesome options here I’d like to highlight that I’ve detailed in Features and Benefits:

Thrive Architect Custom Pages

5. New Behaviors:  There are 2 new brand new behaviors that will help you make engaging transitions, and animate objects and text to make your videos more engaging.

Where Camtasia 2018 Can Improve? (What I Don't Like About it)

1. The Price is Too High – At $249 even for a one-time fee, compared to other similar video editors Camtasia 2018’s price is simply too high. Add one-year maintenance and that is an additional $49.75.

Audio effects and Mic Placement,is it worth the price?

Movavi Video Editor 15 ($59.95) and Movavi Video Suite 18 ($79.99) are both less than 1/3 the price of Camtasia 9;

Adobe Premiere Elements 2019 (latest version) is also only $79.99 and have much of the exact same video editing capabilities.

Camtasia vs Adobe Premiere Pro, is it worth the price?

Adobe Premiere Pro:  For the price of Camtasia 2018, you might as well purchase one of the subscription-based industry-standards for professional film-makers Adobe Premiere Pro which costs about $20.00 per month. Actually, you can purchase it annually for $239.88 per year.

The features of Adobe Premiere pro absolutely blow it away.

Sony Vegas Pro 16:  Sony Vegas stands out as an innovative leader when it comes to non-linear editing. Utilizing a modern user interface delivering a completely customizable experience, Vegas Pro 16 provides the ultimate in flexibility. The UI innovations enhance the fast, organic timeline-editing workflow that VEGAS Pro invented.

Sony Vegas Pro 16, is it worth the price?,

For this reason, at only a price tag of $50 more than Camtasia 2018 ($299), it is the ultimate video editing and screen recording program.

Screenflow 8 by Telestream.net for Mac is video editing and screen recording for Mac and the basic package on sale is only a one-time fee of $90.30. Even if you upgrade to get the Screenflow SuperPac + Premium Support it’s only a total one-time fee of $170.30. This package also gives you access to their fully integrated Stock Media Library, full telephone support, and 25% all future upgrades.

Screenflow Price packages

CamStudio:  Debut Video Capture Software (Pro Edition) by NCH is an open-source alternative to Camtasia; it is only a one-time fee of $29.99 or a subscription-based fee at only $2.77 per month. Even if you opt for their Platinum Support Plan (which gets you Priority Phone Support service for 12 Months), the additional license is only $57.95.

Then there are other inexpensive programs such as VideoPad Video Editor (NCH).

YES, Camtasia is more user-friendly, but is that “user-friendliness” really worth at least $170 more than these other comparable programs?

Is Camtasia 2018’s steep price worth more than the industry-standard for professional film-makings Adobe Premiere Pro, which has many times the capabilities?

In a word, I would say “no”.

2. Lacks Advanced Features

Camtasia's advanced features, is it worth the price?

Camtasia 2018 lacks many advanced features that other video editing and screen recording include for less a price. This goes hand-in-hand with higher price of Camtasia 2018 as mentioned, and the lower overall value for the features and benefits you receive from all the others I previously mentioned.

For almost same price on a subscription-based, you can accomplish full-out professional film recording projects with Adobe Premiere Pro, and for slightly more incredible effects with Sony Vegas Pro 16.

Conclusion: Camtasia 2018, Is it Worth The Price?

Camtasia 2018, is it worth the price?
Camtasia 2018, is it worth the price?

If you have ever owned a previous version of Camtasia (Camtasia 9, Camtasia 8/2) then at only $99.50 it might be worth the upgrade.

But if you never owned Camtasia before, the steep price of $249 even though it is only a one-time fee is too steep in our opinion compared to the other less pricey products that can accomplish much the same end as Camtasia 2018.

DSLR camera footage, camtasia 2018 is it worth the price?

Also, if you are planning to do more sophisticated videos and full-length film projects you will need a more advanced subscription-based program such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Sony Vegas Pro 16.

So as for Camtasia 2018, is it worth the price?

We would recommend at least downloading several of the 14 Day to 30 Day FREE trials available from some of the other aforementioned less pricey comparable consumer programs before purchasing Camtasia 2018.

Great review Kaju, and exactly what I needed.

As I’m looking to dive into video marketing, I need to decide which software I’ll be using. Currently I own Filmora, which is easy to use, but extremely limited.

I was considering buying Camtasia as I see many recommendations for it, but after reading your review and your other recommendations I’ll be looking at the others first.

I’d definitely love to read your reviews on some of them:

Like the difference between both versions of Adobe Premiere.

Thanks again for this great article!

    • Kaju says:

Happy to hear this is exactly what you needed, Fran. There are many others out there that give you more “bang for your buck” than Camtasia.

I will try to publish more video software and screen capture reviews in the near future other than on Camtasia and Screencast-O-Matic. And you just gave me a GREAT idea about doing a review between the different versions of Adobe Premiere.

Thank You my friend, I am glad this article was helpful for you, but you have been helpful to me as well:)

  • Kaju,

Thank you for yet another well sourced, detailed and balanced review, this time of Camtasia 2018 vis a vis similar products, spotlighting its pros and cons and offering a well-reasoned conclusion for the benefit of the reader.

    Blessings!

    • Kaju says:

There are many free video software programs out there that can do the same things Camtasia does and are much more cost-effective, Gabriel. Most of us are looking to spend our money wisely, so I am glad this review was helpful.

Look for more of my video program reviews in the foreseeable future.

      Kaju

  • Saane says:

Another great review. Camtasia, is a software that has been bandied around amongst my online friends, and it has caught my attention, since I am looking to expand my marketing using my own videos.

I agree with you, the Camtasia software is too expensive for mybusdget and Adobe Premiere Pro is probably more my choice (I have used this software before, as part of a creative design course and absolutely loved it).

The capabilities of Adobe Premier Pro does overshadow Camtasia’s, in my own opinion also. APP produces just as a high quality output (if not slightly better, again my own experience) and is user friendly, but with a more affordable price tag.

Thank you, for the researched information, it has only served to confirm what I had already thought about Camtasia.

    • Kaju says:

Adobe Premiere Pro is the industry standard among Pro film makers, so if you can afford it you really cannot go wrong with it.It’s great that you already have experience using it,through your creative design course, and this will help your efficiency when you use it again.

APP does overshadow Camtasia, and Camtasia in my opinion is not worth the money. Thanks:)

  • Monica Bouteiller says:

    Hi,

    Thanks for the review.

I’ve been looking for video software and heard about Camtasia and ScreenFlow. I had no idea Camtasia cost so much and didn’t know it was compatible for Mac computers. Good for know.

I have a Mac laptop but I heard ScreenFlow is better for Macs.

Is the Adobe Premiere Pro suitable for Mac?
